To gather information and generate ideas, we pursued several avenues of research. Our first step was to visit a few retail establishments to get an idea of what products are already on the market for our target audience. The second was to investigate how media presents images of our target audience, and the approaches they use to attempt to sell products to this group. Third, we observed and interviewed a few members of the target audience, both passively watching their interactions with their current music players, and asking questions about what problems or frustrations they have with the current market options. Finally, after creating some basic sketches of ideas that address the needs we discovered, we showed these sketches to parents to get their impressions of our initial ideas.
